- גְּנַאיm. (גני) disgrace, shame, blame; obscenity. Ab. Zar.46a a byname לג׳ of reproach, (cacophemistic, opp. לשבח). Kidd.33b; Y.Shek.V, 49a bot. חד אמר לג׳ one says ‘they looked after Moses (Ex. 33:8) with the purpose of fault-finding; Tanḥ. Ki Thissa 27. Meg.25b כל המקראות … לג׳ וכ׳ words in the Torah which, as they are written (v. כתיב), have become obscene, are in reading changed (שגל changed into שכב ).
